Tony Goldwyn, Katie Finneran and Brooks Ashmanskas are set to join Kristin Chenoweth and Sean Hayes in the cast of the upcoming Promises, Promises. The revival of the musical comedy, directed and choreographed by Rob Ashford, will begin previews on March 27 at the Broadway Theatre and open there on April 25, 2010.
Acclaimed actor/director Goldwyn will play J.D. Sheldrake. His New York acting credits include Holiday, The Water’s Edge and Spike Heels, The Dying Gaul, an Obie Award winning performance in The Sum of Us and Digby. He has appeared in regional productions of Picnic, Carthaginians, Tom Jones, The Legend of Oedipus, Pride and Prejudice and The Real Thing. Mr. Goldwyn is best known for his breakout performance in the film Ghost. His other film credits include The Last House on the Left, The Last Samurai, Tarzan, The Substance of Fire, Kiss the Girls, Nixon, Reckless and The Pelican Brief. His TV work includes The Good Wife, Law & Order: Criminal Intent, Frasier, From Earth to the Moon, The Boys Next Door and Truman.
Tony winner Katie Finneran will take on the role of Marge MacDougall. The actress won Tony, Drama Desk and Outer Critics Circle awards for her performance in Noises Off. She is currently starring in Love, Loss and What I Wore and recently starred in Mauritius on Broadway and Pig Farm off-Broadway. Her other Broadway credits include Cabaret, The Iceman Cometh, Proposals, You Never Can Tell, The Heiress, In the Summerhouse, My Favorite Year, Two Shakespearean Actors and On Borrowed Time. She has appeared off-Broadway in Arms and the Man, Li’l Abner, Bosoms and Neglect, A Fair Country and Edith Stein. She appeared in the West End in Fuddy Meers. Her film and TV work includes Broken Bridges, Walk the Talk, Firehouse Dog, Miss Congeniality 2, Bewitched, You've Got Mail, Liberty Heights, Night of the Living Dead, Drive, My Ex Life, The Inside, Wonderfalls, Frasier, Oz and Sex and the City.
Tony nominee Ashmanskas will play Mr. Dobitch. His Broadway credits include The Ritz, Martin Short: Fame Becomes Me (Tony and Drama Desk nominations), The Producers, Gypsy, Little Me, Dream, How to Succeed… and On the Twentieth Century. He has appeared in the off-Broadway productions of Wise Guys, On a Clear Day…, London Suite, Labor Day, Songs for a New World and It Changes Every Year.
Featuring a score by Burt Bacharach (music) and Hal David (lyrics) and a book by Neil Simon, Promises, Promises tells the story of Chuck Baxter (Hayes), a charming young employee at the Consolidated Life Insurance Company. In an effort to advance at the company, Chuck lends executives his apartment for their extramarital romantic trysts. But things become slightly complicated when Fran Kubelik (Chenoweth), the object of Chuck’s affection, becomes the mistress of one of his executives.
Based on the 1960 Academy Award-winning Billy Wilder film The Apartment starring Jack Lemmon and Shirley MacLaine, Promises, Promises debuted on Broadway in 1968 at the Shubert Theatre, where it ran for 1,268 performances through January 1, 1972. The show includes hits such as “I’ll Never Fall In Love Again,” “Knowing When to Leave” and the title song.
